CLINTON — Smith Auto Recycling is the champion of Clinton Youth Basketball (CYB).

In an exciting, edge-of-your-seat contest, Smith Auto edged SanJay Inc., 47-45, on Sunday night before a large group of fans at St. John’s Gym to claim the league’s first crown.

In the consolation game, James A. Tomolo Jr., CPA defeated D.M.H Electrical, 52-39.

Smith Auto Recycling finishes with a 10-4 record, while SanJay ends with an 8-6 mark.

The league featured an exciting season of boys basketball for Clinton sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, and the title tilt was no exception.

Smith Auto, the top seed in the single-elimination tournament, was led by Doug Price, who poured in a team-high 18 points. Also in double figures for Smith Auto was Eian Gannon with 10 markers, and Trevor Burton added nine points.

SanJay’s Brendan Dion led all scorers with 19 points, and Brady Connelly contributed 14 markers.

Smith Auto owned a 27-18 lead at the half.

With some strong rebounding from Eric Patel and Price, Smith Auto opened the third quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 35-20 lead.

After Price drove to the hoop for a basket, he pulled down a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a lay-in. Price then drove the paint for a basket, and Gannon finished the spurt with a put-back.

Trailing by 15 points, SanJay answered with a 10-0 burst to get within five points, 35-30.

After Dion drove the length of the floor for a basket to start the run, Jack MacDonald nailed a short jumper. Lance Benoit and Dion followed with successful drives, and Dion ended the spurt with two free throws.

Smith owned a 37-33 advantage at the end of the third frame.

The teams exchanged baskets in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Down 43-39, SanJay knotted the score at 43 on a put-back by Brady Connelly and two free throws by Dion.

With two minutes left in the contest, SanJay had erased Smith Auto’s 15-point lead, and it was now anybody’s ball game.

At the 1:30 mark, Smith Auto’s Trevor Burton drained a monster 3-pointer from the baseline to put his team up, 46-43.

With 45 seconds left, MacDonald put in an offensive rebound to make it 46-45.

Smith Auto then ran the clock down and SanJay was forced to foul. Price was fouled and canned a free throw to ice the victory.

“We got a little complacent and took our foot off the throttle a little bit (in the second half),” Smith Auto Recycling coach PJ Chamberlain said. “Every game has been very close in this league, so this one didn’t surprise me.

“These guys (SanJay) have had our number all year,” he said. “They have been a tough match-up.”

“Doug (Price) and Eian (Gannon) and all the kids on the team have carried us this year,” Chamberlain added.

In the consolation game, Tomolo’s employed a balanced attack with three players in double digits.

Dan Glennon scored a game-high 16 points, while Federico Ernst and Jose Nieves netted 13 markers each. Brandon Lee added eight points.

D.M.H. was led by Riley Baldwin and Alex Mojica, who scored 11 points apiece.

“We played better as a team tonight and took better shots,” Tomolo coach Nick O’Malley said. “We had great rebounding and played good defense.

“There was a lot of hustle out there by both teams,” he said.

The league was founded by D.M.H. coach Matt Kobus.

“Back in the fall, I approached (St. John’s gym director) Dan Young and James Tomolo, who had run a league in the past, about starting a new league,” Kobus said “At that time, middle school basketball had been cut due to the (school) budget.

“With their (Young’s and Tomolo’s) help, we got the league started,” he said. “I wanted to promote basketball back in Clinton.”

Kobus said he was thrilled at the success of the four-team league.

“We had 32 kids come out for the teams and everybody made a team and got tons of playing time,” Kobus said. “We had four coaches volunteer and everybody made the playoffs.

“I played here (St. John’s) when there were 23 teams from all over the area,” he said. “I also played CYC (Catholic Youth Council) basketball in high school in this gym.

“I thought this (league) would be something positive for the kids in the town,” Kobus added. “We have had phenomenal feedback from parents and people in the community. The sponsors have been extremely supportive and, without them, there would be no league.”

CLINTON — St. John’s Gym held the first round of the playoffs for Clinton Youth Basketball Sunday, with games featuring Smith Auto Recycling vs. James A. Tomolo, Jr., CPA, and D.M.H. Electrical vs. SanJay, Inc.

Throughout the season, as the games featuring Clinton sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade boys got more intense, the players rose to the occasion, and Sunday was no different.

In the first game between Smith and Tomolo, both teams brought their best offense of the season to the high scoring contest. Smith jumped out to a first half lead, 31-28, with Doug Price, Trevor Burton and Jarrod Hatch leading the charge.

Tomolo’s Federico Ernst and Jose Nieves helped the team battle back to take a lead into the fourth quarter, 44-41.

However, Smith’s Eian Gannon wouldn’t let his team go down without a fight, igniting a fourth-quarter performance that put Smith in front the rest of the game. Smith’s 59-49 win sent them to this Sunday’s championship.

Tomolo’s Jack Slevin and Matt Tambolleo were also key contributors.

The second game of the evening was between SanJay and D.M.H., with SanJay having dropped three of its last four against D.M.H.

It was clear SanJay had not forgotten that fact. Led by Brady Connelly and Jose Santiago, SanJay jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter, and did not look back on its way to a big 42-37 win.

D.M.H.’s Riley Baldwin and Evan MacKillop led their team’s effort against SanJay, trimming the deficit to two points with eight seconds left in the game, but would fall short as time expired.

SanJay’s Deven LaPerle and Lance Benoit provided a great effort in the victory as well, while. D.M.H.’s Jacob Lee and Jacob Casiano provided the heart and hustle to keep D.M.H. fired up.

This Sunday, March 25, St. John’s Gym will host Clinton Youth Basketball’s season finale, with D.M.H. taking on Tomolo Jr., CPA, in the consolation game at 6 p.m., and Smith battling SanJay at 7 p.m. in the league championship.
